When the Kanturk coursing greyhound Peadar’s Prize
In the North Cork Cup final romped to victory.
Don’t ask me his opponent in the final
Although I feel myself I ought to know
My memory at times is not the greatest
And that was many, many years ago.
Trained by James Manley a respected trainer
For coursing Peadar’s Prize was not so choicely bred
But over two Winters he proved himself outstanding
And to the first turn of the hare was seldom led.
Duhallow had so many great track greyhounds
Who broke track records as they raced to fame
So many open class and big race winners
Too many far too many for to name.
But Duhallow did not have many great coursers
Though Mushera Shaggy and oaks finalist Greenfield I recall
And Peadar’s prize who came many years later
Perhaps Duhallow’s greatest courser of them all.
Famed coursing dogs from Kerry coursed in Millstreet
Greats such as Quiet Dandy and Wild July
And Peadar’s Prize Duhallow’s champion courser
To his connections brought moments of joy
And I still recall that January day in Millstreet
The wind blew chill and cold enough to snow
When Peadar’s prize in the care of James Manley
Won the North Cork cup all of those years ago.
